Please pray for Mrs. Virginia Durbin Thibodeau who died on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows at the age of 93. She was distinguished as a "Michigan Artist", taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grosse Pointe, MI, for many years and was artist-in-residence at the school up until her death.

Mrs. T, mother of Bernadette and Joseph Thibodeau, was dear to countless Sacred Heart students and friends. Some knew her as the organizer of truly enjoyable tours of Europe; others learned how to paint under her tutelage as adults or had their portraits painted by her.

Anna May Hawekotte Smith (July 21, 1915 – July 5, 2006)
Anna May Hawekotte Smith of Chicago died at age 90 on July 5, 2006. Anna May was a pioneer and woman for all seasons. Anna May was an alumna of Barat College of the Sacred Heart, Lake Forest, IL class of 1938. Mother Margaret Riley, RSCJ (President of Barat College from 1934-1954) encouraged Anna May to get her masters degree at Columbia University NY and return to Barat College to head up the Speech and Drama Department. Later Mother Riley introduced Anna May to her future husband Charles Carroll Smith who at the time was Executive Director of the Catholic Youth Organization of Chicago and the administrative assistant to the late Archbishop Bernard J. Sheil. Anna May continued her graduate work in speech at Northwestern University. In 1948 Anna May attended the University of Illinois, Neuropsychiatric Clinic, Interning under Dr. L. J. In 1966, Mother Margaret Burke, RSCJ (President of Barat College from 1954-1975) and Anna May received federal funding for the Barat College Upward Bound program. The Upward Bound program, which was supported by the college, ran for eight years and afforded hundreds of high school girls from low-income families residing in both the inner city of Chicago and Lake County, IL the opportunity to prepare for their future college education. In 1972 Anna May became the Director of Barat College’s Continuing Education Program for Women. During this same time period, she was President of the Hektoen Institute for Medical Research of the Cook County Hospital.
In 1973, Anna May returned to her first love teaching and accepted a position with Sangamon State University in Springfield, IL (University Illinois Springfield). In 1985 she retired as a Tenured Professor of Management. There is a Scholarship in her name for Advancing Women’s Status at the University.
Upon her retirement Anna May returned home to Chicago and became the Assistant Director for Job Development Programs at the Northern Illinois National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Over the years, Anna May received many acknowledgements and awards that included: induction into the Department on Aging and Disability’s 1988 Hall of Fame, the Leadership and Margaret Burke Awards from Barat College, She was a founding member of the Illinois Women Administrators, and an honorary member of the National Press Club in Washington DC. Please read the following message from our AASH Honorary President,Sr. Kathleen Conan. At this Easter season, please remember all our Sacred Heart community around the world and especially pray for the safety of our community in Chad. With prayers for Easter blessings for you and yours. All the best, Adele O'Grady Botticelli AASH President

Dear Sisters,

We received the following email this morning from the Motherhouse concerning our communities in Chad. It appears that is was written yesterday; the news this morning says that a rebel group did enter N’Djamena.  If we have more information, we will send it on.  Let us pray during these holy days for the safety and peace in Chad and in so many regions of our world.

Love,

Kathy

Dear Sisters,

I am sending you this message because you have probably heard news about the events that are happening in Chad.

Asunta Clausen telephoned me and she told me that:

-the rebel troops have surrounded the capital, N’Djamena, and that possibly tonight they will enter it,

-in Atron, where we have a community, they can hear the sounds of gunfire

-the Bishop and the Embassy of France have advised everyone to stay inside for safety,

-it is vacation and there are no students in the school,            -the sisters are calm, but worried, because we do not know what will happen.

We are united with them in prayer and place the security of the country in God’s hands.

Please share this information with your communities.

 With love,

Paquita  (Tamayo)

Please pray for my siblings that we can all remain civil with eachother. Our parents are no longer alive to hold our family together. We've all had our differences in the past but its time to move forward.  We're still family regardless of what has happened in the past.  We still need eachother whether we want to admit it or not.

Prayers are requested for my sister Jeannie Strom Miano (Prince Street 1958), and for her 4 children. Jeannie's husband, Larry, died very suddenly on March 10,2006 having been diagnosed with cancer only 10 days prior. In addition, we lost our Mother, at age 93, on January 7, 2006. For any who might like to write to Jeannie, please email me and I shall provide her address. Many thanks.

The lovely and inspirational prayer here below was written by Sr Shirley Miller, rscj, for the success of the AMASC General Assembly (President's meeting) in April 2006.

Olga Rome, AMASC World President, would like all alumnae/i to start a 'prayer chain' around the world as soon as possible.  Sister Miller's prayer is, in her own words, 'focused outward on the world's needs as well as the Sacré Coeur alumnae/i union of minds and hearts'.

PRAYER FOR THE APRIL AMASC MEETING

Lord Jesus Christ through the intercession of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and St. Philippine Duchesne, to your Sacred Heart we confide the April AMASC meeting of the national presidents.

As we look on our world, torn apart by war and terrorism, natural disasters and devastation, poverty and homelessness, helps us as alumnae/i of your Sacred Heart to be balm for our world, to be hope for those in despair, compassion for those in anguish, love for those who are rejected by society, and companions with one another on our way to You.

As we seek to collaborate for a transformed world, help us cross the boundaries of culture and diversity and be one in heart and one in mind, as you have called us to be since the beginnings of the Society in 1800.

As we come together to reflect on the needs of our precious, yet fragile world you have entrusted to us, and as we discern the future of AMASC, help us be led by your Spirit to a place where our deepest commitment meets the deepest hungers of the world.

Cor unum et anima una in Corde Jesu.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, be close to us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, be close to us.
St. Madeleine Sophie, pray for us.
St. Philippine Duchesne, pray for us.

i am asking for prayers for my niece, danielle parks,ph.d.  she was diagnosed w/ acute lymphocetic leukemia in nov.,2005 and started a very harsh road of chemo and radiation that very same day.and, while no leukemia is a "good thing to get", this particular leukemia is of a rather nasty sort. a brother was a perfect match for the bone marrow transplant(st. patrick's day,2006);the procedure was deemed a success by her very esteemed doctors at mcmasters, hamilton, ontario.   (my niece is an associate prof. of archaeology at brock university in st. catharine's ,ontario.)   and,she has been doing so well that she & her fiance set the date for this october!    however, in early january, my niece was -rather abruptly out of remission.   (for you medical people, she does not have the 'philadelphia chromsome'-for which there is now a treatment).   my niece did not attend a convent school;she grew up overseas because her father was an international journalist.   nonetheless, her "convent connections " are real enough:she visited ernestine smith, rscj, her great-aunt whenever she could;her grandmother(my mother-lawrence ave/1934);and, she spent a great deal of time w/ me during her semester breaks and summer breaks, once she started university in the usa.   my heart aches for my beloved niece;and i most humbly ask for your prayers for her,her fiance, her parents, her brothers-and for all us who care so deeply for her.thank you for listening;thank you for your prayers.-----connie parks   post sciptum:my apologies for the typing-and the typo re the date of transplant:it was 17 march,2005 ,obviously.
