Please pray for the Martinez family.  At 5pm this evening, their 3 1/2 year old daughter Mariel passed away after being in the Children's ICU in San Antonio, Texas since October 30th. She had strep throat, and then everything went down hill and began to shut down in 11 days. There was some hope, but then realized that there wasn't anything else they could do.  The doctor's didn't find out what was attacking her poor little body, even after all the tests.  She was on machines to help her kidneys, and although she was alive, they had to put her on life support to help her breathe and was heavily sedated.  The family has a son Marcus who's about to turn 8, and all he wanted was his sister to come home before Christmas.
Thank you in advance.

Please pray for  Eileen O’Gorman, RSCJ

Eileen O’Gorman, RSCJ, revered English professor and champion of literature and the literary arts, died peacefully at Teresian House in Albany, New York, on October 2, 2010, at the age of 98.

Born in Boston, MA, on November 28, 1911, she was the daughter of Gaynor Ignatius O’Gorman and Mary McDermott O’Gorman. She attended Kenwood Academy of the Sacred Heart where she received the coveted Prize of Excellence. After graduation, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in Albany and pronounced her final vows there on February 11, 1941.

Sister O’Gorman received her B.A. in English from Manhattanville College in 1943. She received her MA in 1949 and her PhD in 1955, both in English, from Fordham University. She had a special interest in Irish Literature and completed her dissertation on Anglo-Irish Relations in the Seventh Century.

In 1935, Sister O’Gorman began her teaching ministry, which continued for the next seventy years. She taught at Sacred Heart academies in Newton, MA, Providence, RI, Detroit, MI, and New York City. In 1946, she joined Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart as a Professor of English and held that position until 1981. She was described as a “formidable” teacher with a tough mind and a tender heart who mentored many students in their lives and careers.

In addition to her position in the English Department, Sister O’Gorman served in the Manhattanville Public Relations Department beginning in 1957. From 1962 to 1963, she left Manhattanville to go to Kenwood to assist with curriculum development for the Sacred Heart educational system. Her background in curriculum was further strengthened in 1967 when she was awarded a M.Ed. from Harvard University. Sister O’Gorman later assumed supervisory positions in the teacher education department at Manhattanville during its formation.

Throughout the 1970s, she was a frequent presenter at the “Mornings at Manhattanville” lecture series. In 1978, when professors were required to retire by age 65, the still vibrant Sister O’Gorman, together with Ruth Dowd, RSCJ, and two other retired RSCJ, Cora Brady and Adele Fiske, founded Barat House, where they lectured in their respective areas of expertise.

In 1983, Sister O’Gorman assisted in the creation of Manhattanville’s Summer Writers’ Week, a thriving program that continues today. In 1991, she was instrumental in the foundation and accreditation of the Masters of Arts in Writing at Manhattanville College.

On November 20, 2003, the Dowd - O’Gorman Writing Center at Manhattanville was dedicated to honor the significant influence of Sisters Dowd and O’Gorman in the field of writing. On May 15, 2004, in recognition of her achievements and service to the community, Manhattanville College awarded Sister O’Gorman the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. She continued to teach programs for Barat House until her retirement, in 2005, to the Pax Christi Community at Kenwood.

Sister O’Gorman is survived by her sister Mary C. O’Gorman of Milton, MA, several nieces and nephews, many friends, and her RSCJ community.

Manhattanville College president Molly Easo Smith said: “Sister O’Gorman will be missed by faculty, students, and alumni; those who knew her revered her wit and admired her wisdom. As we mourn our physical parting from one who played a key role in the life of the College, we also accept with love the many gifts she left us for stewardship and sustenance hereafter, among them a signature Master of Arts in Writing program.” A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the O’Byrne Chapel at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in the Teresian House Chapel in Albany followed by interment in the Kenwood Convent Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Society of the Sacred Heart, 4120 Forest Park Avenue, St. Louis, MO  63108.

Barbara Ann Gavin McMahon (BAM) - 2/12/31 to 7/18/10; beloved daughter of James (whom she quoted her whole life) and Marie (both deceased); wife of James I. McMahon (deceased 2007) until 1971; sister of Jim, John (deceased), Patsy and Mary; sister-in-law of John Crawford, Weir Sears and Pat Gavin (BC'49); mother of Jim (Cathy), Marian (Don Paul), Brian (Beth Jackson), Joe (Janet), and Mark (Paula Boudreau); grandma of Stuart, Heather, Joey, Gavin, Ali and Joshua (deceased); great grandma of Sofie and Ella; aunt and friend of many. Barbara graduated from Barat College, Lake Forest and married Jim McMahon in 1952. She raised five kids in Elmhurst and Oak Brook before moving to Las Vegas in 1971. With her constant encouragement, her kids went on to become a banker, a retailer, an airline executive, a jeweler and a liquor executive. She often said, "Money, clothes, airline tickets, jewelry & booze - What else could a girl want?" She loved to pick up her grandkids from school and take them to McDonald's for chicken nuggets. Barbara was a devout Catholic and loved God above all things. She enjoyed the music at the Cathedral in Las Vegas. She was an animal lover in general and a dog lover in specific. Her most recent spoiled dogs were Smooches and Trixie. She moved to Davenport, IA when she started having health problems to be near her sister Patsy, her brother-in-law Weir, and their family. She enjoyed an active social life there until the time came for her to move back to her beloved Las Vegas in 2006 (She started each day saying "It's another beautiful day in Las Vegas!") to be near her kids and grandkids. She was fun-loving, she enjoyed telling jokes, she had a wonderful vocabulary and she had a very sweet and tender heart. She was our sunshine. She lost her battle with Alzheimer's on July 18 and passed away peacefully during hospice care at Aegis in Las Vegas surrounded by her family. Her sparkling blue eyes were just as mischievous as ever, right to the end. She wanted everyone to know she tried. She also asked that that be inscribed on her headstone. There will be a Funeral Mass at St. Luke's River Forest on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 3 p.m. Visitation will precede Mass at St. Luke's at 2:30 p.m. immediately followed by much drinking and memory sharing at O'Sullivan's in Forest Park. Somehow this May 2010 posting, written by alumna Susan Switzer, who is the RSCJ Communications Director, did not make it on this site. Please forgive AASH's delayed notice of the loss of a great one and a 1997 AASH Cor Unum Award winner. (Her alum friends called her "Cora Unum" following the award!) She was the beloved aunt of Sister Carlota Duarte who was able to spend a lot of time with her shortly before her death. Sister McLaughlin's  Memorial Mass is Friday, June 2.

CORA ELIZABETH MCLAUGHLIN, RSCJ, 98 years, died at Teresian House May 22, 2010. Born in New York City on August 16, 1911, she was the daughter of William Sebastian McLaughlin and Lucerna Lyon McLaughlin. She grew up in New York and Connecticut and attended school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Maplehurst, in New York City. After graduating from high school, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood, Albany, NY, on September 7, 1929, and she pronounced her final vows at the Villa Lante in Rome on February 8, 1938.

Sister McLaughlin later received a B.A. in English and History and an M.A. in Education from the University of Detroit. In addition, she continued her education through numerous Art, Film, and Theology workshops and courses.

In 1932, Sister McLaughlin began her ministry in education, a ministry which spanned over 60 years. She taught at Sacred Heart schools in Philadelphia, PA, Albany, NY, Noroton and Greenwich, CT, and Detroit and Bloomfield Hills, MI. Along with teaching, she was Dean of Discipline in several of the schools and worked with various age levels. In her notes, she wrote of her experience in Detroit (1954-1958): “I went to Lawrence Avenue (Detroit) where the Middle School brought out all my teaching skills and my artistic and dramatic ability.”

Sister McLaughlin was a dynamic woman of many talents, distinguishing herself both in academic and administrative posts. Teaching was an adventure which she approached with vibrant creativity, using every means possible to transmit to her students of all ages the excitement she found in learning and her appreciation of beauty. It was said of her that: “…to her students, Cora was a companion, an encourager, and a guide whose lasting interest in them was legendary. Faith in God, optimism and her love for people were among her most endearing characteristics.”

For several years, Sister McLaughlin led groups of students and adults in travel through the United States and Europe bringing to life the charism of the Society of the Sacred Heart and its history. Through these journeys, she created slide presentations which were later used as educative tools. When she retired from the classroom, she continued in ministry through adult education, prayer groups, and retreats.

In 2002, Sister McLaughlin left Greenwich, her beloved home of many years, to join the retired religious community at Kenwood. Then, on June 17, 2006 she moved to Teresian House. Although her physical strength diminished, her mind and spirit remained strong. She kept close contact with family and friends, maintained a keen interest in what was happening in the world near and far, and continued to deepen her contemplative life.

Tonight I received a very unusual call through a geneology line in the Underwood family.   Beverly Underwood called to give information and in the process reveled she revered the Sacred Heart.  She has three young military members of her family stationed in Kandahar and Gitmo.  I told her that I would be pleased to put them on our prayer list.  The power of simple prayer.  Joshua Underwood, Travis Underwood and Michael  Dillow.  Please pray for them so that they will return home soon.

Please continue to pray for my cousin Jack Spencer who went peacefully to God April 27th. Jack was one of the kindest most unassuming persons I know. He was a research chemist for Eil Lilly for many years in research and development and held a number of management positions. After the death of his first wife he remarried another wonderful woman and added  her two sons to his family of two girls. His wife Jane and the family were well prepared for his death, however I ask you to keep them in your prayers also.  Thanks   Frances

Barbara Bowe, RSCJ, 1945-2010

Our God of mystery has taken back home one of the brightest lights in the Society of the Sacred Heart today. Sister Barbara Bowe, biblical scholar and author, died surrounded by her sisters and family at Oakwood in Atherton, California on Sunday, March 14, 2010. Sister Bowe was diagnosed with a brain tumor several months ago and hoped to have further treatment in California but instead quickly succumbed to the aggressive cancer.

Sister Bowe was an alumna of Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart in Albany, Class of 1963, and Manhattanville College, 1967. She was a beloved professor of New Testament studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

To her religious sisters and her siblings and family, to her many devoted students and colleagues, and to her Sacred Heart classmates who loved her so, we extend our deepest sympathy. We thought we would have many more years of her light and wisdom and her loving heart.

Birth:  December 1, 1945
Profession:  December 14, 1975
Death:  March 14, 2010

A Prayer from the RSCJ Provincial Team

God of blessings,
source of all holiness,
the voice of your Spirit has drawn countless men and women
to follow Jesus Christ
and to bind themselves to you
with ready will and loving heart.

Look with mercy on Barbara
who sought to fulfill her vows to you,
and grant her the reward promised to all good and faithful servants.

May she rejoice in the company of the saints
and with them praise you for ever.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
